Former high school to be transformed
The Ringling School of Art and Design and the Sarasota Museum of Art, which merged in October, will spearhead a project to turn the 1926 Collegiate Gothic-style building into a visual arts education center and a contemporary art museum.
The facility will feature art from the 20th and 21st centuries in 11,000 square feet of gallery space. It will also include a 110-seat lecture hall on the first floor and classrooms and studio space on the second and third floors.
Consultant Emily Kass, former director of the Tampa Museum of Art, said the project will give the building new life and the art school and museum a greater presence in the community.
